Fr. George Zervos

Father George Spero Zervos is a native of Detroit and the Sts. Constantine and Helen Church, as well as the Annunciation.  He graduated Holy Cross in June, 1965, and met and married within three months Anne Kotsos from Chicago.  After moving to Salonika Greece, to further his studies in Greek and Theology for eight months, the couple returned to the States, and Father George was ordained Deacon at the Annunciation of Detroit on St. Elias day, and then elevated to the Priesthood one week later at Sts. Constantine and Helen.

He served the Metropolis of Chicago for 23 years, where besides being the Priest of his communities he was Youth Director for the Metropolis for ten years, Oratorical Festival Chairman for seven years, National Oratorical Festival Chairman by request of the late Archbishop Iakovos;  He taught area Sunday School religious Seminars for five years; started the Priest versus Parish Council basketball games, with proceeds going to Holy Cross Seminary and served on the Ecumenical Relations Committee for 15 years.

He was elected a member of the Association of Orthodox Theologians.

In the nineties he transferred to the Atlanta Diocese, where he was voted Vice-President of the Orthodox Priests as well as representative of the Southern Clergy for the Metropolis.  In the year 2000, he was awarded the Saint Andrew Medal of honor at the St. James Catholic Church in Myrtle Beach, SC, by the Monsignor of the Church for his ongoing Ecumenical efforts.  After being instrumental in the rebuilding of the St. John Greek Orthodox church, he was assigned to the Detroit Diocese under our beloved Metropolitan Nicholas.

He has been serving St. Nicholas Church, in Jamestown New York for more than seven years and was elevated to the rank of Protopresbyter in 1984.

He is the author of two Bi-lingual liturgical books;  The  200 page "Funeral Services of the Greek Orthodox Church"  and his recently published 275 page "Ieratikon--the Sacred Preparatory Services for the Celebration of the Divine Liturgy",  which is used by many Priests throughout America, but more importantly is being used as a teaching tool for the Seminarians.

Despite these accomplishments, he believes his most important accomplishments are being a Parish Priest for these past 45 years, a husband to Presvytera Anne for 46 years, and a father to his three children, Stella Maria, Spero George, and Sofia Elizabeth.  He is also blessed with two grandsons, Nicholas Theodore and George Alexander.
