The Metropolis of Detroit Philoptochos is very grateful to the Stefanou family for offering the Florence G. Stefanou Memorial Scholarship to a deserving young adult. There were many qualified applicants and the Stefanou family had a difficult task in choosing a recipient. Florence was a dedicated Philoptochos member on all levels, locally, Metropolis and National. She was a past Metropolis Philoptochos Board President.
In 2021, The Florence G. Stefanou Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Eva Dimitra Turner. She is a member of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Jamestown, NY and has been involved with junior Philoptochos, choir, Sunday School, church fundraisers and annual festival, ethnic dancing, the St. John Chrisostom Oratorical Festival, St. Timothy’s summer camp, and Ionian Village “Next” 2021 program.
Eva graduated from Eisenhower High School on June 11, 2021, and during her high school career was a member of the National Honor Society, participated in track, swim team, choir, school musicals, theater and dance.
Eva is excited to start attending the Edinboro University of Pennsylvania in August 2021, with the goal of obtaining her Master Degree in Speech and Hearing Science. She feels that a career in Speech & Hearing Science is perfectly in line with the Philoptochos Mission of helping people overcome their challenges, whether they were obtained from birth or as a result of the aging process, stroke or accident.
Eva is extremely honored and thankful to the Florence G. Stefanou Memorial Philoptochos Scholarship Committee to win this very generous and prestigious award, and looks forward to using the funds toward her school supplies, books and other necessary expenses.
Metropolis of Detroit Philoptochos Society is the separately incorporated Philanthropic arm of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.
The Metropolis of Detroit Philoptochos consists of 37 chapters in Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, New York, Ohio and Tennessee with a total of 2020 members.
Many innovative projects and outreach programs are carried out by energetic and enthusiastic women throughout the Detroit Metropolis, many of whom are married, have children and are working. Also, extensive work is being done by Philoptochos women in their communities.
